Terry was jeered by a section of supporters early on in the 3-1 friendly victory over Egypt, but later on any boos were drowned out as the fans got behind the team.

Fabio Capello, who stripped Terry of the captaincy after the allegations surrounding his private life last month, was pleased with both the reaction from the stands and the performance of the player.

"Thank you for the crowd," he said. "They supported the team and John Terry. This was a most important game for him after what happened outside the pitch.

"He played a fantastic game like I know he can do at this level. When I chose him as captain, I knew the value of him as a player."

Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard said the boos were "half-expected" and that he hopes "it doesn't happen again", but Terry told BBC Radio Five Live: "The way they supported me tonight and got behind me was fantastic. I really appreciate that. Obviously there were a few jeers but I can handle that and they're fully entitled to their opinion."

Steven Gerrard added: "I thought he was superb, thought he handled everything really well. He showed he's a fantastic player and a great leader."

However, Manchester City forward Tevez has spoken out in defence of team-mate Wayne Bridge, saying that he believes Terry's actions were unacceptable.

"It's complicated to say something about what Terry did to Bridge," he said in the Sun. "I don't think you can do that with the wife of another player.

"It's wrong. In my opinion, Terry has no moral code for what he did to Bridge. In my neighbourhood if you do that, you lose your legs, or more - you don't survive."

Tevez clashed with Terry during Manchester City's 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge at the weekend, but he says that was purely because of on-field events.

"I didn't fight with Terry because of that," he said. "I fought with him because he took me by the shirt and I didn't like it. I became furious with him because of that."

Tevez also revealed he has an unhappy relationship with Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack.

"I have always had problems with Ballack but, you know, it is just football, not personal issues between us," he said. "I don't know, maybe he doesn't like me, as I don't like him.

"On the field, I have never understood what he is saying to me but I am sure he didn't understand me either."
