Highland League champions Cove Rangers claimed a Scottish League scalp as they knocked Annan Athletic out of the Active Nation Scottish Cup with a 2-1 victory.

It was the visitors who scored the opener and it came about as a result of a rash tackle by Kevin Tindal to earn him a booking. Lewis Sloane whipped in the free-kick and skipper Kevin Neilson rose to head it down for Peter Watson to rifle the ball home.

To rub salt into the Cove wounds, Tindal received his marching orders two minutes later for a heavy challenge on Chris Jardine.

However, the dismissal seemed to inspire Cove as they levelled on 64 minutes when a long ball by goalkeeper Stuart McKenzie evaded the Annan defence and fell kindly for Barrie Stephen to fire home from 18 yards.

The winner came after 84 minutes when Stephen's 40-yard free-kick was fumbled by the goalkeeper and Robbie Henderson was first to react to force it home on the goal line.
