Wolfsburg survived a late rally by Borussia Monchengladbach to keep pace with the Bundesliga's early pace-setters.Alexander Madlung scored the opening goal in first-half injury time for the reigning champions and Christian Gentner made it 2-0 two minutes into second-half injury time. American midfielder Michael Bradley pulled a goal back for the visitors a minute later but the Wolves hung on.
The victory gives Armin Veh's side 16 points and leaves them fifth in the table, five points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburg.
Monchengladbach remain second to last on the table with seven points after dropping their fifth straight game and sixth of the last seven contests.
Wolfsburg nearly took the lead after just four minutes but Edin Dzeko blasted his shot from 16 yards off the crossbar.
Veh looked on disappointed in the 20th minute as Sascha Riether sent a cross into the box where Obafemi Martins tried to make it fancy with a back-heel shot, but the ball deflected off his standing leg.
Dzeko was again unlucky on the half-hour mark, as his header hit the left-hand post from 12 yards.
Gladbach actually put the ball in the net four minutes before the break through Marco Reus, but he was ruled offside.
The hosts grabbed the lead in the final action of the first half as Madlung headed in a corner from the right side a minute into injury time.
Wolfsburg were close to doubling the lead two minutes after the restart but Gladbach keeper Logan Bailly did a good job batting away a Zvjezdan Misimovic free-kick which went untouched through the area.
Gladbach missed a golden chance to equalise with 20 minutes left but Raul Bobadilla tried a back-heel shot from 17 yards after Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio and Madlung collided and saw the ball get away.
Gentner appeared to have decided the match for good with his blast from the left side two minutes into injury time.
But Bradley struck home a minute later from 18 yards, but time ran out before Gladbach could find the equaliser.
