Eredivisie leaders FC Twente recovered from an early setback to extend their club-record unbeaten run to 28 games.

Wesley Verhoek's first-minute goal was cancelled out by Bryan Ruiz's brace before Kenneth Perez rounded off victory for Steve McClaren's side.

The result leaves them five points clear of PSV Eindhoven, who travel to third-placed Ajax on Sunday.

The visitors took a shock lead straight from the kick-off when Ronnie Stam's weak headed back-pass let in Verhoek to finish low with his left foot.

It took Twente almost half of the first period to get back on terms, courtesy of Ruiz's penalty.

Pascal Bosschaart brought down Kenneth Perez and Ruiz fired the ball high into the centre of the goal as keeper Robert Zwinkels dived to his left.

Stam redeemed himself for his early error when he denied the visitors a second goal in first-half stoppage time. Verhoek's cross eluded keeper Sander Boschker and Stam cleared with Anders Oper lurking.

And his efforts were rewarded when the prolific Ruiz netted his second, and his 19th of the season, 11 minutes after half-time. Strike partner Luuk de Jong played in the Costa Rican to fire low past Zwinkels.

De Jong went close to making it 3-1 when his effort from the right side of the penalty area was tipped over the bar.

But the hosts did not have to wait long for their third goal as Perez benefited from a stroke of luck in the 69th minute.

The forward's shot from the right channel was on target but appeared to be heading straight at Zwinkels until it took a deflection off Kai van Hese and wrong-footed the keeper.

That was the end of the goalmouth action as ADO failed to impose themselves as an attacking force in the second half, Twente holding on comfortably to take another step towards their title goal.
