Lyon missed the chance to claim top spot in Ligue 1 after sharing 10 goals with Marseille in a remarkable match at the Stade Gerland.

Marseille, who put six past FC Zurich in the Champions League in midweek, led 4-2 with nine minutes to go but ultimately had to rely on an injury-time own goal from Lyon's Jeremy Toulalan to salvage a point.

The pulsating action lasted from start to finish with Lyon, who secured their place in the last 16 of Europe's elite club competition on Wednesday night, going ahead after three minutes.

Marseille failed to clear Kim Kallstrom's cross and Miralem Pjanic picked up the loose ball before firing it past Steve Mandanda.

The visitors were almost level within a minute, Hugo Lloris saving Mamadou Niang's shot and Jean Makoun clearing Benoit Cheyrou's follow-up off the line.

Marseille made no mistake seven minutes later, Souleymane Diawara nodding in Fabrice Abriel's corner.

Parity lasted just three minutes, however, as Sidney Govou marked his return to the starting XI with a sensational run and shot which gave Mandanda no chance.

Marseille hit back again on the stroke of half-time as Cheyrou slammed the ball past Lloris from just inside the area.

Didier Deschamps' side went ahead for the first time when Abriel crossed for Bakari Kone to volley home two minutes after the restart.

The impressive Abriel almost made it 4-2 with a shot which produced a fine save from Lloris while, at the other end, Mandanda got down well to block a Lisandro Lopez effort.

Marseille did score again with 10 minutes to go, Brandao nodding home at the far post.

Lyon hit back almost immediately when Lisandro, who scored a late equaliser against Liverpool in midweek, chipped over the advancing Mandanda after latching on to Makoun's through ball.

And the Argentinian was at it again two minutes later after Gabriel Heinze was adjudged to have handled in the area. Lisandro stepped up and coolly converted the spot-kick.

Lyon then completed the turnaround with a fifth goal in the final minute. Lisandro and Pjanic combined to play in Michel Bastos and the young Brazilian made no mistake to send the Gerland into a frenzy.

Incredibly, there was more to come as Marseille still found time for an equaliser.

Niang's shot was not cleared and in the middle of an almighty goalmouth scramble Toulalan got the final touch as the ball found its way into the back of the net.
