N.Y. 5-0 Toronto: Red Bulls end in style

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (STATS) - The New York Red Bulls couldn't have asked for a better way to close out their 14-year stay at Giants Stadium.

Juan Pablo Angel and Mac Kandji each scored twice to help lift the Red Bulls to a 5-0 win over Toronto FC on Saturday night

Matthew Mbuta struck for a late penalty kick in the final soccer game played at the home of the NFL's Giants and Jets. In March, the team will play at Red Bull Arena, a 25,000-seat soccer-specific stadium near Newark.

"We are extremely happy," Red Bulls interim coach Richie Williams said. "I thought the team played well. We finished the chanced we created which obviously has been difficult for us over the last couple of games or so."

The kickoff was delayed 16 minutes because of lightning and thunder, but it didn't take New York long to strike once the game was under way.

Kandji opened the scoring in the second minute. He took Albert Celades' quick touch of Angel's through ball, split defenders Emmanuel Gomez and Nana Attakora and beat goalkeeper Brian Edwards with a low shot inside the far post.

"I couldn't imagine it better than this," Kandji said. "I was very happy to close it like this."

Angel made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute off an assist from Kandji. Angel's second goal came in the 62nd minute, taking a pass from rookie fullback Jeremy Hall and beating Edwards inside the far post for his team-leading 12th tally, placing him in a tie for third on the league's goal-scoring list.

"I will sacrifice all my goals to have a better season this year," Angel said. "I'm not extremely disappointed with my goal total this year. It wasn't as good as I expected, but any striker that you talk to would take double figures and I'm happy to score as many goals as I did this year."

Kandji capitalized on a Toronto defensive mistake to put the Red Bulls in front 4-0 in the 70th minute. Midfielder Sam Cronin attempted to head Andrew Boyens' long ball out of the back to Edwards, but Kandji picked it off and tapped into the open net.

Kandji had a chance for his first MLS hat trick when he was taken down from behind in the box by Adrian Serioux four minutes into second-half stoppage time. Instead, he let Mbuta take the penalty kick and the Cameroon-born midfielder scored first goal of the season.

Toronto FC had hoped to clinch the first playoff berth in club history, but instead was all but eliminated.

"It sums up our season," TFC midfielder Dwayne De Rosario said. "Everyone needs to take a look at themselves and see if they gave enough. I think a lot of guys can't do that. All I know is that I tried my best and that's it."

Coach Chris Cummins didn't sound optimistic about his future in Toronto.

"Would I be back next season? Listen, there is a fair chance I won't be," he said. "My family is back in the U.K. and I need to be with them. Unfortunately, there were things promised to me that I did not get and I need to be by my family."
