A second-half strike from substitute Richard Walker was enough for promotion-chasing Shrewsbury to earn a 1-0 victory over Chester.Walker bundled home from close range in the 57th minute after winger Chris Humphrey drilled an inviting low cross into the box.
Shrewsbury had earlier struggled to test their local rivals but once in front they carved out a host of chances.
Chester were made to rue two near misses at the start of the second half as Kevin Ellison curled a shot against the post before Lloyd Ellans was denied by keeper Luke Daniels.
Chester were reduced to 10 men for the final 10 minutes when midfielder James Harris was shown a straight red car for a late challenge on danger-man Humphrey.
Chester keeper John Danby kept his side in contention with a series of fine saves while Shrewsbury's top scorer Grant Holt and skipper Ben Davies were both guilty of missing excellent chances.
But Walker's solitary strike proved sufficient for the home side to register a 13th home victory from 17 attempts this season to leave Chester now without a win since Boxing Day.
