Artem Kravets hit a crucial brace as Dynamo Kiev drew on the road at Valencia
to progress to the last 16 of the UEFA Cup on away goals.
After the teams drew 1-1 in a snowy Kiev in the first leg, Kravets got the
visitors off to a dream start in the return when he fired home after 34
minutes.
Goals from Carlos Marchena and Asier Del Horno swung the match back in the
Spanish side's favour, but Kravets had the final word, claiming a crucial second
goal for Dynamo after 73 minutes to set up an all-Ukrainian tie with Metalist
Kharkiv in the next round.
David Villa threatened early on for the hosts, the Spain international's shot
from just inside the area forcing Stanislav Bogush into action after two
minutes.
Roman Eremenko had Dynamo's only chance of a disappointing opening spell from
the Ukrainian side, drilling a right-footed shot wide from 25 yards after 11
minutes.
Valencia contributed the lion's share of the goal threat for much of the
opening half hour, with David Villa and Alexis forcing Bogush to make decent
saves.
But it was Dynamo who took the lead against the run of play after 34 minutes
when Kravets picked up the ball in the Valencia area and crashed a low shot into
the bottom-left corner of Cesar Sanchez's net.
The visitors could have moved further clear after 42 minutes when Kravets
crashed a shot wide of the mark, while seconds later Carlos Correa drew a superb
save from Cesar.
But just as they had done to Valencia, Dynamo conceded against the run of play
to put the tie back in the balance.
A minute before the interval Manuel Fernandes sent over an inviting free-kick
into the Dynamo area and Marchena rose highest to head home beyond Bogush.
Kravets forced another stop from Cesar four minutes after the restart, and the
hosts quickly capitalised on that to nose ahead after 53 minutes.
A Fernandes free-kick failed to be cleared by the defence and the ball fell to
full-back Del Horno who lashed home.
But the impressive Kravets again popped up to haunt Valencia 17 minutes from
time, the striker putting the visitors in the box seats with a drilled effort
high into the net from the right side of the area after being found by Correa.
There was still plenty of time for Unai Emery's side to find another goal that
would have put them into the last 16, but the Dynamo defence denied them even a
sniff of goal in the closing minutes as the visitors deservedly progressed.
