Brazilian playmaker Jadson hit a superb hat-trick as Shakhtar Donetsk booked their place in the latter stages of the UEFA Cup with a thumping win over Christian Gross' Basle in their Champions League encounter tonight.

With Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon already qualified from Group C, this match was all about who would parachute into European football's second-tier competition next year.

In the end it was no contest as the Ukrainian side emphatically outplayed their Swiss opponents at the Olympiyskiy Stadium to secure third place thanks to Jadson's treble and further strikes by Willian and Yevhen Seleznyov.

Shakhtar forward Willian fired in an early shot on the Basle goal which Franco Costanzo was more than equal to and tipped to safety.

The Swiss outfit hit back after 13 minutes when Ivan Ergic unleashed a volley on Andrei Pyatov's goal but the ball sailed harmlessly wide.

Willian had another go midway through the half but this time the Brazilian was off target from the edge of the penalty area.

The breakthrough arrived after 32 minutes when Oleksiy Gai knocked the ball down in the penalty area and Jadson reacted quickest to fire a low shot into the right corner of the Basle net to register his second goal of the group stage.

The hosts wasted little time extending their lead at the start of the second period.

Willian joined compatriot Jadson on the scoresheet after 50 minutes, the lively playmaker sending a delightful curling shot beyond Costanzo and into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Basle had an opening to pull a goal back after 62 minutes when Eren Derdiyok got free inside the area but could only head tamely at Pyatov from 12 yards.

The Ukrainians ended the game as a contest just two minutes later when Jadson bagged his second of the night after guiding Darijo Srna's low cross into the back of the net from six yards.

Ergic had another opening for the Swiss midway through the half when he worked space on the edge of the Shakhtar box but once again Pyatov got his angles right and made a comfortable save.

Jadson capped a brilliant personal performance with his third goal of the evening 17 minutes from time, the Brazilian latching onto a pass from the equally threatening Willian and firing home high into the centre of the goal from just inside the area.

And four became five just two minutes later as Jadson turned provider, playing in Seleznyov to fire home a low shot from the edge of the area which set the seal on an impressive display by the home side.
