Queen of the South failed in their bid to equal a club record run of eight wins on the trot, which was achieved 38 years ago, as they played out a drab goalless draw against Partick at Firhill.

The Jags might have had a penalty after nine minutes when a Gary Harkins cross from the right picked out Stephen McKeown at the back post and his header appeared to strike Queen's defender Ryan McCann on the arm, but referee Alan Boyd didn't agree.

John O'Neill came on for the injured Bob Harris after 23 minutes and with his first touch of the ball should have put the Doonhamers in front, but he sent a diving header wide after a terrific cross from Paul Burns had found him unmarked.

After 33 minutes veteran Queens defender Jim Thomson was shown a straight red card for a nasty tackle from behind on Mark Roberts.

Queen's then passed up a great chance to edge in front after 44 minutes when Sean O'Connor headed a Jamie McQuilken free-kick straight at goalkeeper Johnny Tuffey from eight yards.
