FLORENCE, February 21 (UEFA Cup) - Fiorentina sailed into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup with a comfortable aggregate victory over Rosenborg on Thursday.
Fabio Liverani, who returned from a two-week injury lay-off last weekend, got the all-important first goal shortly before half-time and Daniele Cacia sealed the victory 10 minutes from time.
Yssouf Kone pulled one back for Rosenborg right at the end but it was a case of too little too late for the Norwegians, who lost 3-1 overall.
Protecting a one-goal lead from the first leg, Fiorentina knew that a draw would take them through, so it was no surprise that attempts on goal were at a premium.
Rosenborg had to score to have any chance of progressing but were wary about conceding the goal that would leave their hopes of making the next stage in tatters.
It was the Italian side who had the first real shot after 12 minutes as Adrian Mutu forced Rune Almenning Jarstein into action with a dangerous looking cross that the Rosenborg keeper tipped over the bar.
That seemed to spark the Viola into life as they upped the pressure on the Rosenborg goal.
Jarstein reacted well to catch Tomas Ujfalusi's tantalising cross on 14 minutes and seconds later Mutu's fierce 25-yard shot was blocked by Vadim Demidov.
Rosenborg had to wait until the 18th minute for their first opportunity but Alexander Tettey blazed over from 30 yards.
Liverani, who missed the first leg through injury, broke the deadlock in the 38th minute as he latched onto Marco Donadel's pass before drilling the ball into the bottom-right corner from the edge of the area.
Rosenborg had even fewer opportunities in the second half as Fiorentina took complete control of the game.
Per Ciljan Skjelbred had a decent chance to equalise just after the hour mark and spark Rosenborg's hopes of progressing back into life but he fired wide of the left-hand post from 12 yards.
And on 80 minutes Fiorentina confirmed their place in the last 16 as Cacia, who had only been on the pitch for eight minutes, fired Manuel Pasqual's cross high into the centre of goal from six yards.
Kone headed Marek Sapara's cross home from the edge of the six-yard box two minutes from time but, though there were nearly five minutes of stoppage time, Rosenborg were never going to find the two more goals they needed to take them through.
