MADRID, December 20 (UEFA Cup) - A last-gasp Simao free-kick sealed top spot in UEFA Cup Group B for Atletico Madrid who pipped Panathinaikos to first place.

Panathinaikos had entered the game with a 100% record in the group phase and then Dimitrios Salpigidis put them ahead in the first half only for Luis Garcia to level it after the break.

Raul Garcia was then sent off for Atletico but the hosts did not wilt and sealed victory with Simao's free-kick.

Salpingidis had an early shot blocked by Christian Abbiati but at the other end Maxi Rodriguez had a shot blocked by Josu Sarriegi.

Atletico's Diego Forlan had a shot blocked by Morris before Panathinaikos went close again with Marcelo Mattos blasting over from long distance.

Raul Garcma forced Arkadiusz Malarz to save his long-range shot but at the other end Mattos curled a free-kick over the bar.

Luis Garcia was next to threaten for Atletico with a curled free-kick that went just over the bar.

Panathinaikos made Atletico pay for their profligacy when they took the lead.

Mattos was the provider for Salpigidis who found the net with his right foot from inside the area.

Mattos was then not far off with a shot from distance as the Greeks looked to cement their advantage.

In the second half Simao narrowly missed with a chance to give Panathinaikos a 2-0 lead and then Loukas Vintra fired over.

And the Greeks were made to rue their misses as Atletico equalised.

Forlan played the role of provider with a pass to Luis Garcia who netted from close range.

Raul Garcia was then sent off by referee Knut Kircher for foul and abusive language but then Atletico almost took the lead, with Malarz saving well from Sergio Aguero.

Panathinaikos almost sneaked it but Andreas Ivanschitz was wayward with a late shot and then Atletico struck the killer blow.

Morris fouled Aguero and Simao found the net with a free-kick to give the Spaniards the spoils.
