Peru rounded off a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign on a high by posting a narrow win over fellow group minnows Bolivia in Lima.

Johan Fano hit the only goal after 53 minutes but the goalscorer's night turned sour just two minutes later when he was shown a straight red card.

Fano's early exit levelled up the numbers on the pitch after Bolivia had earlier been reduced to 10 men following the 39th-minute dismissal of Rosauro Rivero for a second yellow card.

Peru's third win of the campaign was not enough to lift Jose Del Solar's side from the foot of the South American zone standings. They finished with 13 points from their 18 games, two fewer than second-bottom Bolivia.

A first half of few chances did little to entertain the fans at the Estadio Alejandro Villanueva but the game burst into life six minutes before the break when Rivero was given his marching orders following a foul on Luis Ramirez.

Bolivia held out until the break but they succumbed to the Peru assault eight minutes after the restart when Luis Ramirez sent over a cross for Fano to fire past Carlos Erwin Arias in the visitors' goal.

The Once Caldas striker's joy was short-lived, however, as he picked up a straight red card for dissent just moments after the restart.

Bolivia were lifted by Fano's dismissal and looked a threat as they sought an equaliser in the final 35 minutes. The visitors lacked bite in the final third, though, and failed to find the breakthrough.

The closest they came to snatching a point came three minutes from time when Wilmer Zabala unleashed a long-distance effort but Peru goalkeeper Leao Butron watched it all the way and made the save as the hosts held on for a morale-boosting win.
