Former Inter Milan midfielder Khalilou Fadiga gave Bolton a scare when he collapsed during the warm-up before the club tumbled out of the Carling Cup against Tottenham - 4-3 after extra-time.

• Fadiga in hospital after fainting

Fadiga, who has a history of heart problems, collapsed and was taken to the dressing room for treatment by anxious medics.

Bolton immediately claimed the Senegal star - who was due to be on the bench - had suffered an injury, as yet unspecified.

Tottenham went on to claim victory and secure a place in the fourth round thanks to goals from substitute Michael Brown and Jermaine Defoe in extra time.

They twice came from behind to triumph and gain revenge after being beaten in the league only last Saturday.

However Bolton, last season's beaten finalists, were guilty of missing a number of good chances.

Henrik Pedersen should have put the home side ahead after 13 minutes when El Hadji Diouf delivered a glorious cross from the right.

The Danish striker peeled away from his marker only to fire well wide of the target from inside the six yard box.

Bolton kept up the pressure and Ricardo Gardner was only inches away from getting on the end of an inswinging free kick from Fernando Hierro.

They took the lead after 27 minutes when Hierro's free kick caused confusion in the visiting defence.

Pedersen was quick to react although Tottenham defender Ledley King appeared to get the final touch leaving Kasey Keller stranded.

Tottenham hit back on the counter attack in the 39th minute and Simon Davies delivered a good cross from the right.

Fredi Kanoute got on the end of it but Kevin Poole showed marvellous agility for a veteran to take the header cleanly.

Hierro then sprung the offside trap with a clever ball over the top to Pedersen.

However his first touch was poor and Keller was able to race out and mop up.

Tottenham drew level a minute before the break with Defoe's first goal in a month.

He turned smartly after receiving a pass from Davies to drill a shot beyond Poole from 20 yards.

It was the kind of clinical finish that had seen Defoe promoted to the England squad and just the boost Tottenham needed.

Bolton began the second half at a fast pace and Pedersen weaved his way into the penalty area only to see his effort blocked by Keller.

Tottenham manager Jacques Santini then decided to switch things around after 63 minutes with Robbie Keane replacing Kanoute.

Diouf, on loan from Liverpool, was continuing to put in a solid shift for Bolton.

And the home supporters were willing their team on in what was becoming a closely fought encounter.

Keane quickly got into the pace of the game and turned away from Cesar only to be brought down.

That earned the Bolton defender a booking from referee Mike Dean. It was also a warning about how difficult an opponent Keane can be.

Pedersen squandered another glorious chance in the 73rd minute when he fired a shot over the top from close range following a cross from Diouf.

Bolton, however, regained the lead two minutes later with Okocha scoring from the penalty spot.

He struck his effort firmly beyond Keller after Goran Bunjevcevic had tugged Kevin Davies's shirt.

Bunjevcevic then made amends by pulling Tottenham level at 2-2 by bundling the ball home in the 85th minute to take the game into extra time.

Keller then reacted superbly three minutes into extra time to turn away a shot by Okocha from an acute angle.

Tottenham took the lead for the first time on the night in the 95th minute after sub Michael Brown headed home a free kick from Michael Carrick.

Pedersen and Nicky Hunt both went close for Bolton before Defoe put Tottenham 4-2 ahead with his second goal of the game after 103 minutes.

The drama continued right on the stroke of half time when former Tottenham striker Ferdinand pulled one back for Bolton.

Keller then made a stunning block from Ferdinand six minutes from time as last season's beaten finalists crashed out.

  • Fadiga in hospital after fainting

Former Inter Milan midfielder Khalilou Fadiga was rushed to hospital after fainting on the pitch before Bolton's Carling Cup defeat by Tottenham.

Fadiga, who has a history of heart problems, fell to the ground suddenly in the warm-up and was stretchered off to the dressing room by anxious medics.

He came around in the treatment area at the Reebok Stadium before being ferried to hospital.

Manager Sam Allardyce said: 'He is in hospital being checked over as he appears to have fainted on the pitch. We will find out tomorrow what the situation is.

'He just about finished the warm-up when he fainted and we will have to find out the reason why. Due to the lad's past history we will have to be very careful. Our medical staff decided it was best he went to hospital and be checked over.'

Fadiga arrived at Bolton after having his contract cancelled at Inter Milan, where an irregular heartbeat came to light.

Allardyce revealed he had passed a fitness test only this morning on a calf injury.

'Because we had already picked the team we decided to put him on the subs' bench, ' said the Bolton boss. 'We will keep an eye on him and hopefully he will be out tomorrow.'

Tottenham coach Chris Hughton was delighted at the way his side fought back after losing to Bolton only last Saturday in the league.

'We were aware this was going to be a difficult game irrespective of what team Sam put out,' he said. 'You are looking for players to rise to the challenge and to get through in whichever fashion is very pleasing.

'We showed a lot of character to come back from being twice behind.

'The determination of the players, especially having to go through an extra 30 minutes says a lot about them.'
