EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Former MetroStars midfielder Ross Paule scored on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, lifting the Columbus Crew to a 1-1 tie with the MetroStars Sunday night.

The MetroStars (9-8-6) maintained their two-point advantage over the Crew (7-5-10) in the Eastern Conference standings.

Paule, who was traded to Columbus during the off-season, converted the kick after MetroStars defender Jeff Parke pulled down Kyle Martino just inside the penalty area. Paule's shot, his fourth goal of the season, eluded MetroStars goalkeeper Jonny Walker to the right side of the net.

The kick came 12 minutes after the MetroStars took a 1-0 lead on a goal by John Wolyniec, his seventh of the season. Amado Guevara, the league's leading scorer, struck the crossbar with a shot, and Wolyniec knocked in the rebound.

The MetroStars dominated with 13 shots on goal, but Crew keeper Jon Busch made 12 saves. He entered the match as the third best goalie in the MLS with a 1.10 goals-against average.

Goalie Jonny Walker made two saves for the MetroStars, facing only three shots.

The MetroStars lost midfielder Joselito Vaca to a right knee injury in the first half. He may be out up to four weeks.
