Former Lens midfielder Olivier Monterrubio admits it saddens him to see his old club struggling as he prepares to return to the Stade Felix Bollaert with Lorient tomorrow.

Monterrubio left Lens following their demotion to the second division in 2008, spending a season at FC Sion before returning to France and Lorient.

The 33-year-old faces his former team for the first time tomorrow and has revealed he never wanted to leave.

"It makes me sad to see Lens in this delicate situation,'' he told www.rclens.fr. "It's a club I hold dear to my heart.

"I spent a year and a half there and I met amazing people as well as extraordinary fans. I worked with a really good group.

"Unfortunately, I left after their relegation to Ligue 2 even if, personally, I would have liked to have stayed at Lens. It didn't bother me to continue in the second division but choices were made.''

Lens are having a dreadful season and are second from bottom in the league following a run of four consecutive defeats.

They have also only scored once in Ligue 1 since August.

In contrast, Lorient have kicked off the campaign better than expected and are currently sixth in the standings.

Monterrubio continued: "We have had a really good start to the season.

"It's true that everyone has fit into the mould of what the coach was demanding. It's caught on well.

"To rake in good results at the start of the season is always a bonus. I hope that will serve us right until the end.''

Lorient will be looking to atone for their disappointing defeat at Ligue 1 strugglers Sochaux last time out and Lens could pay the price.

Coach Christian Gourcuff has an almost full squad to choose from, apart from long-term absentees Jeremy Morel and Yann Jouffre, after Yazid Mansouri recovered from a calf injury picked up in training.

Lens captain Eric Chelle faces a late fitness test after breaking his nose in the defeat against Toulouse. Samba Sow is definitely out, but the club insists his illness is not swine flu.
