Montpellier striker Victor Montano insists his team have learned the lessons from their humbling defeat to Rennes and are determined to put them into practice when they travel to Auxerre tomorrow.

The newcomers suffered only their second loss of an impressive season to date with a 3-0 reverse last weekend, but remain within touching distance of Ligue 1 leaders Bordeaux.

That is a surprise in itself, with just two points separating them from the table-toppers, and Montano is keen to keep that success going.

"The Rennes game is behind us now,'' he told www.mhscfoot.com.

"We've looked at our performance and we're aware of the gaps in it. We didn't put in enough effort to get something from the game and we can only blame ourselves.

"Auxerre are in great shape at present and full of confidence and we have to be tough against them and remain focused.

"We were not compact enough against Rennes, not quite together, and we can't afford to play like that.

"Defeat wasn't the end of the world but we must pick ourselves up again quickly in order to continue our adventure.''

Auxerre have recovered from a slow start to the season to register four successive wins and climb to seventh in the table.

They were twice made to come from behind to see off Lille last weekend, but coach Jean Fernandez is not interested in performances as long as the wins keep coming.

"For now I'll settle for points,'' he said. "We have to store them up as there will be more difficult times ahead.

"Our ambition remains the same. I'll be happy with a top-10 finish.''

Auxerre will be without Alain Traore (ankle), Julien Quercia and Kevin Lejeune (knee) tomorrow.
