Burnley have been dealt a blow ahead of the visit of derby rivals Preston with on-loan Russell Anderson ruled out for the season.
The Sunderland defender damaged knee ligaments during Tuesday night's Carling Cup victory over Fulham at Turf Moor and a scan has confirmed the Scotland international damaged his cruciate following an innocuous fall.
The injury means the 29-year-old is unlikely to return before the end of the campaign, but striker Steve Thompson is available again after being cup-tied in midweek.
Former Manchester United winger Chris Eagles could also earn a recall to the starting line-up after only making the substitutes' bench against the Cottagers.
Ade Akinbiyi and Kevin McDonald were unavailable for selection on Tuesday due to injury and could again miss out.
Preston boss Alan Irvine is hoping for a triple injury boost ahead of the trip.
Left-back Callum Davidson could be available again after missing the past two games due to a knee injury.
The niggling complaint has forced him to miss five Preston games and three Scotland internationals in total this season but he could be available after a series of injections.
Midfielder Richard Chaplow has also missed the last two games with a hamstring injury but is hoping to be passed fit to face his former club.
Meanwhile striker Chris Brown is nearing full fitness after a bout of sciatica and ankle problems and could make his first appearance of the season from the bench.
Goalkeeper Wayne Henderson (back) and defenders Liam Chilvers (Achilles) and Neal Trotman (hernia) remain sidelined.
