David Edgar Bio Send To Friend

Edgar signed for Burnley in July 2009 following the expiry of his contract with Newcastle United, with the Magpies due compensation due to his age.

The defender was born and raised in Canada by English parents - his father Eddie played in goal for Newcastle - before moving to join the Magpies Academy at the age of 14.

His performances in the youth ranks led to his call-up for the Canada Under-20 team in 2003 even though he qualified for the Under-17 team.

Newcastle had to hold off interest from Mallorca in the summer of 2005 who had been eager to take him before he accepted professional terms at St James' Park.

He had been spotted by scouts playing for Canada at the 2005 World Youth Championship in Holland.

After graduating to the reserves, Edgar was handed his first team chance in the 2006-07 season as the club were ravaged by injuries.

Edgar made his bow in a 2-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers on Boxing Day.

But better was to come on New Year's Day as Edgar scored a dramatic, long range leveller for a very young Newcastle side against Manchester United at St James'.

The defender had been forced to play in a full-back role rather than in the centre, which had allowed him to get up in support of the attack.

A month later he was named Canadian Youth Player of the Year and later that season awarded a new contract with Newcastle.

But his career stagnated at Newcastle and he chose to move on when his contract ended in 2009, bound for Premier League newboys Burnley. He played 19 games for Newcastle.
