Kieron Courtney Dyer Bio
Send To Friend
Dyer was once one of the gems of the Premier League but his injury record has wrecked his career.
Such has been the level of problems it was surprising West Ham United paid a multi-million pound fee for the attacking midfielder. But when you have a player with the speed, finsihing ability and skill of Dyer some feel it is worth the risk.
He made his name at home-town club Ipswich Town, but moved to the Newcastle United for £6million after suffering promotion play-off heartbreak with the Suffolk side in 1999.
Dyer's versatility is a valuable asset and then-Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson described his out-of-position performances during the 2000/01 season as 'breathtaking'.
Dyer graduated from England Under-21 to the 'B' squad and finally broke into the full England squad and made his debut against Luxembourg in September 1999.
He was in the England squad at the 2002 World Cup finals and came on as a substitute against Sweden, Denmark and then Brazil in the quarter-finals.
Dyer will always be remembered for the on-pitch brawl with team-mate Lee Bowyer against Aston Villa at St James after Dyer had clearly refused to pass to his team-mate throughout the match. He received a three-match ban for his part in the fracas.
At the start of the 2005/06 season, Dyer was injured once again and he made only one further appearance before February and until the end of the season he never looked quite right.
He didn't appear in 2006/07 in the Premiership until November but finally looked to be back to fitness and form - scoring three goals in five league games.
Dyer earned a recall to the England team for the first time in two years in February 2007 after proving he was fit, featuring against Spain.
The fact that he remained fit until the end of the season, and featured in England's summer games, was a huge boon.
But, eager for a new challenge, Dyer left the Magies in August 2007. A return of 251 games over eight seasons shows his injury problems.
He eventually moved to West Ham United for a fee of £6million in a protracted transfer, making his debut in a 1-0 win at Birmingham City.
But Dyer suffered a horrific double leg fracture in only his third appearance - a League Cup tie at Bristol Rovers - which ended his season before August was out. He has a lot to do to prove he can sustain a run in the Hammers' side.
