Marcus Hahnemann Bio
Send To Friend
What a run Hahnemann had at Reading. The Seattle native made almost 300 appearances for the English side from 2001 to '09 before Reading released Hahnemann on May 15, 2009.
His latest stop is with newly promoted Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers. Now, Hahnemann needs a promotion. He's playing behind Welsh international Wayne Hennessey. Hahnemann's pro career began back home with the Seattle Sounders in the old A-League in 1994. Hahnemann put up a 0.57 goals-against average as a rookie and led the Sounders to the championship a year later.
After a Sounders repeat championship in 1996, Hahnemann left home, moving to the Colorado Rapids in the MLS in 1997. He helped the Rapids to the MLS Cup that year, where they lost to D.C. United 2-1. Hahnemann set a club record with 2,520 minutes. And so began Hahnemann's English odyssey.
He signed with Fulham in June of 1999 and backed up Maik Taylor. With Edwin van der Sar entering the Fulham fold, the squad loaned him out to Rochdale (2001) and Reading (2001-02). Hahnemann would join Reading permanently in the summer of '02 on a free transfer, becoming the Royals' top keeper. He missed only one game during the 2005-06 season in which Reading earned promotion to the EPL for the first time in its history. For his play, Hahnemann was named to the Championship Team of the Year by the Professional Footballers' Association.
Hahnemann made the most saves in the Premier League (139) in '07, but the Blues were relegated in just their second EPL campaign.
Hahnemann's U.S. debut came way back on Nov. 19, 1994, in a 1-0 loss to Trinidad and Tobago. He was the No. 3 keeper behind Kasey Keller and Tim Howard at the '06 World Cup. Surely, Hahnemann would sign up for the third-string role in South Africa.
Strengths: Focused keeper who will lay out for anything.
Weaknesses: At 37, Hahnemann could be in the twilight of his career.
Career high: His season with Reading in 2005-06 -- named to the Championship Team of the Year by the Professional Footballers' Association.
Career low: It was a good seven-year run, but being released by Reading was difficult.
Style: Revved up and ready to go. Very intense.
Quotes: "[Reading] hasn't said anything to me yet so I'm just waiting to see what happens. Does it depend what division we are in? I don't even know that. I have always stated from day one eight years ago when I was at Fulham and came on loan here that this was the club I wanted to play for, and it's still the case. It's a little bit frustrating when you don't know if you are getting paid in two months or not." -- Hahnemann told mirrorfootball.com in May of 2009.
Trivia: A big Xbox 360 fan.
Soccernet says: With Hahnemann not playing much for Wolverhampton, Troy Perkins, suiting up for Valerenga in Norway, may claim the No. 3 keeper spot.
