Danny Simpson joined Newcastle United on a season-long loan from Manchester United in August 2009.

Salford-born Simpson joined United as a youngster and was a star of the club's successful youth team in the 2004-05 season.

He was sent to United's chosen feeder club of Royal Antwerp in Belgium to gain experience alongside other United youngsters.

He got to make his first ever appearance for the first team in a pre-season friendly with South African club Kaizer Chiefs before returning to Antwerp for the start of the 2006/7 season.

He returned to England by means of a loan to Sunderland, where he shared in the Black Cats' promotion success with pal Jonny Evans.

He is very highly rated by the coaching staff at Manchester United, and was thrust into the first team for his United bow in a Carling Cup defeat to Coventry City in September 2007. His Premier League bow came a month later as he came on in a 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

Simpson was regularly involved in both League and Champions League matches until January when he was loaned to Ipswich Town for the remainder of 2007-08, playing eight games for the club.

The strong, fast, right-sided defender moved to find regular first-team football in 2008 and joined Blackburn for the season; while he was loaned out again for the duration of the 2009-10 campaign to Championship side Newcastle.
