Wayne Brown Bio Send To Friend

Wayne Brown is an experienced defender who was one of the stars as Hull secured a place in the Premier League for 2008/09.

The player had joined the Tigers in the summer of 2007 for a fee of £450,000 from Colchester United after a long chase. And after making his debut in a 3-1 League Cup win at Crewe Alexandra he soon proved to be an astute signing, missing only five Championship matches all season as Hull went up through the play-offs.

The central defender began his career at Ipswich Town but struggled to hold down a place in their side and was forced to go out on loan to Colchester, Queens Park Rangers, Wimbeldon and Watford. He joined Watford on a free transfer in December 2002 after making 40 League appearances in seven years with Ipswich.

But it turned out to be a disappointing stay for Brown as he soon fell out of favour. He was loaned to Gillingham in 2003/04 and then to Colchester again - and he joined the Us permanently at the end of the season.

Colchester proved to be the turning point in Brown's career as he became a hugely influential figure and a star of their League One title side in 2004/05. He soon adapted to life in the Championship and Hull, who were promoted behind Colchester that same season, swooped in the summer of 2007. He had been the only outfield Championship player to play every minute of 2006/07.

His commanding style, tough tackling and physical presence enabled him to become a vital cog in Hull's promotion machine.

Brown's first goal for Hull - and his only one of 2007/08 - came against old club Ipswich. Brown previously made four Premier League appearances with Ipswich in the 2000/01 campaign.

The centre-back failed to make an impression in the top flight, leading to a loan move to Preston North End in October 2008. He played six matches for PNE. He was then loaned to Leicester City in January 2009 after a permanent switch to Charlton Athletic fell through.
