Nick Barmby Bio
Send To Friend
Veteran midfielder Barmby enjoyed a dream 2007/08, being a crucial player as he helped him hometown club into the top flight of English football for the first ever time.
A one-time England regular - he won 23 caps for his country and was in the starting line-up for the 5-1 win in Germany - Barmby may now be in the twighlight of his career but he still has the ability to have an impact on a game.
He was the forgotten man of the KC in the first half of the campaign before being brought back into the side by manager Phil Brown. And Barmby popped up with goals in both legs of the play-off semi-finals against Watford to help fire the Tigers into the final - where they booked a place in the Premier League.
Barmby began his career with Tottenham Hotspur, and it was while at White Hart Lane that he made his England breakthrough in 1995 as a substitute against Uruguay.
He moved to Premier League yo-yo club Middlesbrough for £5.25million in the summer of 1995, before Everton took him to Goodison Park for £5.75million 14 months later.
And in 2000, Barmby joined an elite group of players to have moved across Stanley Park from Everton to Liverpool. He enjoyed two good seasons as Anfield but eventually made way for new signings.
As Liverpool strengthened for the 2002/03 campaign, the rumour mill had Barmby on the move to a host of clubs, but in the end he would move to Leeds United for a bargain £2.75million before the big kick-off.
It didn't go well for Barmby, as he failed to make an impression at Elland Road. Out of the picture, and will Leeds in deep trouble, he was loaned to Nottingham Forest at the end of February 2004.
With Leeds in financial trouble he was granted a free transfer in the summer of 2004 and he agreed to return to his hometown of Hull - which was only possible as a desperate Leeds agreed to play a percentage of his wage packet.
He made an emotional Tigers debut in a 1-0 home win over AFC Bournemouth and was an important player, scoring nine goals and missing just seven matches, as the club won promotion to the Championship as League One runners-up. The player also bagged City's quickest ever goal after seven seconds at Walsall.
Injuries hampered his chances in 2005/06 and he'd fallen out of favour in 2006/07 until Phil Brown took charge and brought him back into the side. And in the second half of 2007/08 he wrote himself into City folklore once again.
He made his 100th League appearance for Hull in the play-off final victory over Bristol City.
