Danny Murphy Bio Send To Friend

Murphy moved to Fulham on the final day of the summer 2007 transfer window, frustrated at a lack of regular football at Tottenham during the in 2006/07.

The indefatigable midfielder went on to become a regular starter for the Cottagers and kept his place in the team throughout the season, scoring five goals in 33 matches.

His involvement in Fulham's escape from relegation was vital, particularly on May 11, 2008 when his header was enough to give Fulham a 1-0 win away at Portsmouth; the victory ensured the club's Premier League survival.

Murphy began his career as a trainee at Crewe Alexandra, one of the many players that Dario Gradi developed into a Premier League star of the future. He made 166 appearances for Crewe, scoring an impressive 34 goals, before he was snapped up by Liverpool for £2million during the summer of 1997.

He was a fringe player in his debut term at Anfield and returned to Crewe on loan for the second half of the 1998/99 season for some first team football.

Murphy had more chances during the 1999/2000 season, and scored a memorable long-range goal against Leeds. He then battled hard during the 2000/01 season and secured a regular place in the starting line-up.

He became something of a cult figure at Anfield with his determined and creative displays in the midfield, but he struggled to win a regular place in the 2003/04 campaign and by the time Rafa Benitez arrived at Liverpool, Murphy's time was up and with the intention of claiming regular first team football he sought a move. He played 249 games for Liverpool, scoring 44 goals.

Initially, Tottenham had a bid accepted, but the north London club could not offer Murphy guarantees over his involvement. That led to interest from Charlton, with whom he penned a three-year contract in a £2.5million deal.

The midfielder made his Addicks debut in a 4-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers but struggled for form in his first season in south-east London. However, that all changed in 2005/06 when his superb form earned rave reviews.

However, despite his own form it became clear that Murphy wanted to leave The Valley, and with his contract due to expire the following summer Charlton decided to cash in, with Murphy finally joining Spurs as the transfer window was about to shut in January 2006.

Murphy played 64 games for Charlton, scoring ten goals.

The player's Spurs debut was delayed as, coincidentally, the next round of Premiership games saw the two clubs meet at White Hart Lane and it was agreed he would not play a part.

This proved prophetic as Murphy was a rare starter for Spurs in his first season. Increased competition for places in 2006/07 saw him lose out and he was only given 11 starts all season along with 8 subs' appearances.

Murphy decided to move in search of first-team action, and signed for Fulham on loan, as one of a number of new faces at Craven Cottage.
