David Weir Bio
Send To Friend
A veteran defender, Weir has experience and guile in abundance and has been a talismanic figure for Rangers since joining in 2007.
Weir started his career with Celtic boys club before opting to study in the United States for four years. He signed professional terms with hometown club Falkirk on his return in 1992, making his name as a strong central defender in around 150 appearances for the Brockville Park club.
The defender moved into the Scottish Premier League in 1996 when Heart of Midlothian signed him. He did well at Tynecastle before moving to Everton for a nominal fee in February 1999.
Weir would become one of the best signings ever made by Everton, especially when the size of the fee was taken into consideration. He forged a formidable partnership at the back with fellow Scot Richard Gough, and skippered the side during his eight year stint.
After Everton released him from his contract early in January 2007, Weir signed for Rangers on an initial six-month deal. He sealed himself a permanent deal and impressed in the centre of defence despite his age.
Weir won the Scottish Cup and League Cup in 2008, before he was appointed Rangers' captain in April 2009 after Barry Ferguson had been stripped the role following an incident whilst on international duty.
He played 36 games at the age of 39 to lead the side to League and Cup glory in 2008-09 and is a vital part of the backline. He was called up to the Scotland squad to provide cover for the defence in August 2009.
