Many observers were confused when Portsmouth were so keen to sell the highly-regarded Taylor in the transfer window. Many more thought it odd he chose to join Bolton.
He fell out of favour during the first half of 2007/8 at Portsmouth and agitated for a move. He signed for a fee of £5.2m and settled in well under Gary Megson, scoring three goals, including an equaliser at Chelsea in the very last game of the 2007/8 season.
Taylor has earned a reputation as a versatile left-sided player with a penchant for the spectacular.That was underlined in 2006/07 as he produced a series of stunning goals - none better than the 45-yard special - dipping volley - he hit home against Everton.
He started his career with Luton Town. He only got his chance in the Hatters' side when the club were in receivership in the summer of 1999 as they were forced to blood youngsters.
The player soon made the left wing-back slot his own and won the Young Player of the Year award in his first season as a professional.
Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp paid a bargain £450,000 to sign him in June 2002.Taylor played 146 games for Luton, scoring 17 goals.
Taylor can play as a left-back, a wing-back, a left-sided midfielder and a central midfielder. His pace, defensive attributes and ability to get forward make him a vital player for his clubs.
