Carlos Edwards Bio
Send To Friend
After making his name with Trinidad side Defence Force, Edwards was always destined for something bigger and better and he duly secured his move to the English leagues, initially with Wrexham.
Impressive displays with the Welsh club won him plenty of admirers and there were no shortage of takers when he opted to make a move in the summer of 2005. Luton Town were to be his chosen club and he excelled in a resurgent Hatters side.
In 2006 the Port of Spain-born midfielder played at the World Cup with Trinidad and Tobago and was consequently linked with many clubs.
Sunderland manager Roy Keane snapped him up for £1.5m in January 2007 and he played a vital role in Sunderland's storm to the Championship.
However, his first year in the Premier League turned into an injury nightmare. The goal-scoring midfielder suffered a hamstring injury in only the second game of the season and his return, three months later, lasted just three games after he suffered a leg fracture in December.
The right-winger, who can also operate on the left flank, returned from injury to play in eight out of the last nine league games, helping Sunderland win 12 points in the club's most fruitful period of the season.
His Sunderland future appeared to be in doubt when he was against loaned out, to Wolverhampton Wanderers, in October 2008. But after the depature of Roy Keane at the Stadium of Light he was welcomed back into the first team.
