Nyron Nosworthy Bio Send To Friend

Defender Nosworthy earned a crack at the Premier League in July 2005 when he joined Sunderland on a free transfer. His first season may have been disastrous but the Keane revolution saw him switch from right-back to centre-back and him become a player of hitherto unrecognised poise.

His accomplished performances earned him a contract extension until 2010 and on Sunderland's return to the Premier League he became mainstay of the Black Cats' defence, making 29 appearances alongside either of fellow centre-backs Johnny Evans or Paul McShane.

The defender, who came through the ranks at Gillingham, chose to leave the Priestfield Stadium at the end of his contract with the club relegated into League One.

He made his bow in a 1-0 win at home over Fulham in November 1998, replacing the injured Roland Edge on 16 minutes.

But it would not be until the 1999/2000 season that he broke into the team on a regular basis. His first ever goal came in September that season when he netted against Scunthorpe United.

The full-back had played 199 games for Gillingham, scoring six goals, when he made the switch to the Stadium of Light.

However, there were serious doubts about his ability to hack it in the Premiership after Sunderland's disaster season of 2005/6. But the renaissance of the Black Cats saw 'Dave' become a cult figure and Player of the Season for 2006/07.

And in October 2007 Nosworthy received his first call-up to the full Jamaica squad for their games against Ghana and Honduras.
