Steven Caldwell Bio
Send To Friend
A strong defender and a danger from set-pieces, Caldwell joined Burnley in the summer of 2007 for £200,000 from Sunderland.
The Scotland international began his career with Newcastle United, breaking into the first team at the beginning of the 2000-01 season and within a year his full Scotland debut came against Poland.
The Stirling-born defender played a part in Newcastle's unsuccessful InterToto Cup campaign in the early part of the 2001-02 campaign before going out on loan to Blackpool and Bradford City.
After hardly figuring for Newcastle in the 2003-04 season, he was loaned to Leeds United and was told he could leave Newcastle at the end of the campaign, when he opted to sign for Sunderland.
His Black Cats bow came in a 3-1 home win over Crewe Alexandra, and Caldwell became a virtual ever present as Sunderland marched to the Championship title. The defender played 81 games for Sunderland but was deemed surplus to requirements following promotion and he headed to Burnley.
After an injury-plagued first season at Turf Moor, Caldwell missed only a few games as the club won promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs in 2008-09.
