Paul Hartley Bio
Send To Friend
Hartley began his career as a right winger, but was moved into a central midfield position in 2002 and has blossomed for both club and country in his new role.
The midfielder started his career at Hamilton Academical in 1994, before spells at Millwall, Raith Rovers and Hibernian. He helped Hibs win the First Division in 1999, but was allowed to leave for St. Johnstone the following year.
His form improved dramatically with a change of position, but he was relegated with the club and was not seen in the top flight again until Hearts signed him on a free in the summer of 2003. Hartley's performances for Hearts earned him international recognition in March 2005 and he won his first Scotland cap, against Italy, in the San Siro.
Hearts won the Scottish Cup in 2006 and he was linked with a host of clubs, including Rangers and Celtic. But with Hearts ready to sell, he moved to Parkhead in January 2007 for £1.1m and helped Celtic to their third league title in a row.
He was used less in 2008-09 and was released at the end of the season, before signing for Bristol City.
A key member of Scotland's UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, the midfielder has been used more defensively in recent years but is still a useful squad player.
