Grant Leadbitter Bio
Send To Friend
This local lad came through the ranks at Sunderland and has emerged as a key player in Roy Keane's team.
During the promotion season of 2006/07 this attacking midfielder played a part in every one of Sunderland's games as they won the League Championship.
Leadbitter continued to feature the following year as Sunderland successfully remained in the Premier League and even drew comparisons to Paul Scholes with regards to his style of play.
Much is expected from this England Under 21 international, who once scored against Brazil as an England U19 international, and he signed a contract extension in January 2007.
He made his debut for Sunderland as a 71st minute replacement for John Oster in a 4-2 League Cup defeat to Huddersfield Town in September 2003.
Leadbitter then made one appearance in 2004/05, playing the whole of the 3-3 League Cup draw at Crewe Alexandra - the Black Cats lost on penalties.
He was loaned to Rotherham United in September 2005 but returned to play a few Premiership games as Sunderland crashed to relegation in 2006.
Since establishing himself as a first team regular in 2006/07 Leadbitter has not looked back.
