Federici was signed as a free agent for Reading in September 2005 after a series of loan spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United.
The Australian failed to impress initially and was sent on loan to Carshalton Athletic for the second half of 2005/06, before choosing to join Bristol City on loan at the start of the 2006/07 season.
However, he was recalled without making a first team appearance and returned to Reading.
He made his impression on the league when Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup. The 'second-string' side performed admirably and ther young Aussie 'keeper was particularly impressive.
For this performance, he was named the FA Cup "Player of the Round" for the 5th Round.
However it was a little premature, as in the replay, the 'keeper conceded three goals in the first six minutes and was at fault as Man United romped away with the tie.
Despite this, he showed enough promise to sign a new two-year contract with the club, keeping him there until 2008/09 and made his league debut against Tottenham after an injury to first choice 'keeper Marcus Hahnemann.
