Johnson was welcomed into the Manchester United first team reckoning in late-October 2003 when handed the squad number 32.

The striker, a bustling player, is very good at holding the ball up.

He actually began his career as a youngster with Crewe Alexandra before being plucked from Dario Gradi's famous set-up to join the United Academy in the summer of 2001.

Johnson scored the winning goal for United in the FA Youth Cup in 2003.

He made his debut as a late substitute in the Carling Cup victory at Leeds in October 2003.

The forward was loaned to Royal Antwerp for the remainder of the season in January 2004.

Another loan spell came in 2004/05, when he moved to Coventry City for the season. He played 29 games, scoring five goals.

He returned to Crewe on loan for the first half of the 2005/06 campaign.
