Philipp Degen Bio
Send To Friend
An experienced Switzerland international, he was heavily linked with a move away from Borussia Dortmund during the summer of 2008 and it was little surprise when Liverpool scooped him up on a free transfer.
Normally first choice right-back for his country he had to battle back from a groin injury to make the squad for Euro 2008 but was not fit enough to take part and remained an unused substitute.
Degen is an attacking full-back in the modern mould. That means defensive duties are not always top of his list of priorities, but he is a real threat breaking forward.
He began his professional career with FC Basel and after making his debut in 2001 won three league titles and one domestic cup in his four seasons at the Swiss club.
In 2005 the defender joined the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and made 68 first team appearances in the seasons at the club, although his final year was marred by injury.
Degen has a twin, David, who also plays football for FC Basel.
