Pascal Chimbonda Bio Send To Friend

An attacking full-back, Chimbonda re-signed for Tottenham in January 2009, having lasted only six months at Sunderland; but soon made the move to Blackburn after falling out of favour again.

The Wearsiders had picked him up for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2008, where he joined his fellow Tottenham team-mates Teemu Tainio and Steed Malbranque at the Stadium of Light. But having failed to impress, he returned to White Hart Lane for around £3m, before moving on again six months later, to Blackburn.

Chimbonda began his career with La Havre, making 85 appearances before being signed by Bastia in November 2003.

The defender came to prominence in the English game when Wigan Athletic signed him from the French club in July 2005 for an undisclosed fee. His energetic, adventurous and skilful displays for the Premiership newcomers made him one of the finds of the season.

However, after just one season at the JJB Stadium he demanded to leave - handing in a transfer request on the pitch, in full kit, moments after the final whistle of the 2005-06 season - and quite rightly come in for much criticism.

Chimbonda, who was rumoured to have cost just £500,000, had a £6m price tag placed on his head by furious manager Paul Jewell and Tottenham Hotspur immediately began the pursuit. After a summer-long transfer chase Spurs, reportedly, met Wigan's asking price though the actual fee remained undisclosed.

He made his Spurs debut in a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United and swiftly became first-choice right-back for Martin Jol, becoming a fans' favourite by result of his all-action style of play.

The arrival of Rangers full-back Alan Hutton in January 2008 limited his appearances under new coach Juande Ramos though and Chimbonda opted to leave White Hart Lane at the end of the season to join Sunderland.

In his six months up north he made 13 appearances, but never settled and returned to Tottenham under new boss Harry Redknapp in January 2009; but again he failed to settle and was signed by Blackburn in August 2009 as a replacement for Stephen Warnock.
