Richard Duffy Bio
Send To Friend
Portsmouth swooped to sign promising defender Duffy from Swansea City for an undisclosed fee - thought to be worth in the region of £400,000 - in January 2004.
However, he has never had the chance to prove himself at Fratton Park and it seems his future will ultimately lay elsewhere and has spent four loan spells with Coventry City, including most recently from March 2008 until the end of the 2007/08 season.
Duffy had made his debut for Swansea City in December 2001 in a heavy FA Cup defeat at Macclesfield Town, but then saw his career halted by a serious injury - spondylosis of the lower back.
The defender was out of football for over a year, until he returned at the start of the 2003/04 season to win a regular place in the first team and rave reviews.
A versatile player, Duffy is primarily a centre or a right-back, but can also contribute in a defensive midfield position.
The Wales youth international soon began to attract the attention of scouts from bigger clubs, and Portsmouth won the race.
Pompey signed him as one for the future. His Premiership move came after only 23 appearances for Third Division Swansea.
He was handed his debut in May 2004, as a 22nd minute substitute for the injured Linvoy Primus in a 1-1 home draw with Fulham.
Duffy was loaned to Burnley in late September 2004, making his bow in a 2-2 draw at home to Stoke City. He went on to play nine games, scoring one goal.
The player was again loaned out in late-January 2005, this time to Coventry City with whom he played 15 games. He impressed enough to be re-signed on loan for the whole of the 2005/06 campaign, playing 34 games. He was back at Coventry again in October 2006 for another two months, playing 13 matches.
He made his full debut for Wales in August 2005 at Swansea's Liberty Stadium against Slovenia.
Duffy returned to Swansea on loan until the end of the season in January 2007, playing 12 matches.
Duffy's seventh loan spell away from Portsmouth came with Millwall, who he joined on deadline day in February 2009.
