Gary McSheffrey Bio Send To Friend

McSheffrey joined Birmingham City in August 2005 from Coventry City for a deal initially worth around £2.5m but which subsequently increased to closer to £4m following the St Andrews club's promotion.

The club had tabled no fewer than fours bids for the gifted finisher before finally sealing a deal to prise McSheffrey from his hometown club. Blessed with pace and shrewd eye for goal McSheffrey is a striker by trade, but is also an accomplished left-winger or midfielder.

After progressing through the Coventry youth system he went on loan to Stockport County and Swedish side IK Brage and won England U-20 honours, before he got his first real break for the Sky Blues in the 2002-03 season making 14 starts and bagging 4 goals. More goals followed in the following season before an impressive goal-getting spell on loan with Luton Town.

Moving to St Andrews, he played in the Premiership and was the club's leading scorer with 16 goals. A season earlier with Coventry he had bagged 17 goals, mostly coming from an outside left position and looked a good investment.

After the Blues' relegation, he struggled to assert himself and was sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest in March 2009. A persistent knee injury hampered his progress though and he returned to club for surgery, in preparation for the 2009-10 season.
