Roy O'Donovan Bio
Send To Friend
Sunderland signed Roy O'Donovan from Cork City in July 2007 for an Eircom League record transfer fee of 500,000 euros.
The striker, who began his career as a right-winger, was the top scorer in the League of Ireland when countryman Roy Keane snapped him up.
O'Donovan played in the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League qualifiers with Cork and made his Premier League debut for Sunderland against Birmingham City on August 15, 2007, as a 69th-minute sub.
He made his first start of the season in the 3-1 defeat to West Ham United and bagged his first goal for the Black Cats in a pre-season friendly against Sporting Lisbon ahead of the 2008-09 campaign
A former Republic of Ireland U21 international, he has also represented his country at B level.
But he stuggled to make a lasting impression and after just 19 appearances and no goals he was loaned to Dundee United at the start of the 2008/09 season. O'Donovan scored just one goal in 13 matches at Tannadice before being recalled by Sunderland in January.
However, he was not back at the club for long as he signed for Championship club Blackpool on loan until the end of the season.
That spell was similarly unfruitful and after returning to Sunderland once more for the start of the 2009-10 season, O'Donovan joined Southend on loan for a month on September 16.
