Erik Edman Bio
Send To Friend
Edman joined Wigan from Rennes for £500,000 in January 2008.
The Swede is an experienced international and featured in all three of his country's group games at Euro 2004 - although failed to make the squad for Euro 2008.
He started his football life Helsingborg, coming through the club's fine youth system to make his professional debut in 1997. He won the Swedish Cup the following year - and the championship in 1999.
That summer he moved to Torino, but left after only six months bound for Karlsruhe - having not featured for the first team.
His chances were also limited in the Bundesliga, leading to a return to Germany with AIK Solna.
In 2001 Edman made the move to Heerenveen where he would flourish. After three years and a good performances at Euro 2004, the defender consulted fellow Sweden international Freddie Ljungberg before joining Spurs.
However, in the summer of 2005, the arrival of South Korean left back Lee Young-Pyo led Edman to make the decision of leaving England.
Moving to French side Rennes, Edman established himself as first choice at left-back and did enough to catch the eye of another Premier League club.
In January 2008, Wigan came calling and signed the Swede as a replacement for the Everton-bound Leighton Baines.
Damaging his anterior crutiate ligament in his first few months at the club put paid to his season, but he should return as first-choice at left-back.
