Chester was brought into United's Academy after impressing scouts playing for youth side, Winwick Athletic.

Such was James' ability as a youngster he was playing Under-9s football at the age of just five.

A tall and agile defender, United will hope he can follow the likes of the Neville brothers and Wes Brown through into the first team.

He was loaned to Peterborough United on deadline day in February 2009, and then to Plymouth Argyle in September.
