Amdy Faye Bio
Send To Friend
Faye signed for newly promoted Stoke City in the summer of 2008 following an aborted attempt to join Blackburn Rovers in January of the same year.
The defensive midfielder moved from Charlton Athletic to Glasgow Rangers on a season-long loan in August 2007 but after failing to break into the first team attempted to play for Rovers.
The Senegal international trained with Premier League but FIFA rules which bar players from playing for three teams in one season prevented the transfer.
Faye was signed by Iain Dowie for Charlton for £2million in summer 2006 after one-and-a-half seasons with Newcastle United, but was eager to leave the club following the Addicks' relegation in 2006/07.
Before joining Newcastle Faye had already played in the Premier League, with Premiership newcomers Portsmouth in August 2003, whom he joined for £1.5m from French side Auxerre.
The Senegal international, part of his country's squad at both the African Nations Cup and the World Cup in 2002, is described as an intelligent footballer with a good range of passing.
However, Faye was one of those to miss from the penalty spot as Senegal lost out of Cameroon in the African Nations Cup final.
The defensive midfielder was overlooked for much of the World Cup campaign - considered by many to be bad luck for the side!
Faye is a product of the Monaco youth academy and moved to Auxerre in 1998 after a spell with Frejus, a club based on France's Mediterranean coast.
Portsmouth faced a Football Association investigation over Faye. The FA wrote to the club asking for their observations over why the midfielder played under an assumed name of 'Henry' in a pre-season friendly against Kilmarnock. Nothing came of it.
In November 2007 Faye and his agent were arrested by City of London Police, along with Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, over allegations of corruption.
His transfer from Portsmouth to Newcastle United in January 2005 was one of those about which the Stevens inquiry report in June 2007 expressed concerns but no charges have been brought.
