After starting life in the Australian National Soccer League, McDonald moved to England in 2000 to sign for Southampton.
The striker spent three years with the Premier League club but failed to make the breakthrough into the first team. He spent time out on loan with Huddersfield Town and AFC Bournemouth.
A permanent move to Wimbledon in 2003 also failed to be a success but when he moved north of the border to sign for Motherwell he soon became a star.
The Australia international scored 42 goals in 96 league starts for 'Well, which attracted the interest of Celtic. He moved to Parkhead in the summer of 2007 for £700,000.
McDonald's Celtic debut came in a 1-1 draw at Spartak Moscow in a Champions League qualifier and he soon became a vital member of the team, scoring 31 goals in 2007-08 and another 19 the season afterwards.
