Ramires had spent only one season with Benfica, winning the Portuguese title, before Chelsea got their man following a month-long chase.

Brazil coach Dunga had championed the midfielder in the run-up to the 2010 World Cup finals. A hard-working player who covers plenty of ground, he also represented his country in the 2008 Olympics. Five appearances in Brazil's 2010 World Cup qualifying effort confirmed had earned the right to claim one of the precious 23 positions up for grabs in Dunga's plans.
