Such is the standing of De Rossi within the Italian game he is nicknamed Capitan Futuro and is seen as a future leader for both club and country - succeeding Francesco Totti at AS Roma and Gianluigi Buffon with Italy.

De Rossi began his career at his home-town club of Ostiamare but in 2000 he joined Roma's youth system and, one year later, he marked his senior debut for the Serie A side in a Champions League clash against Belgian side RSC Anderlecht. He has never looked back and the all-action performer, who plays in a defensive midfield role, became one of the side's top players.

His importance to Roma was symbolised in the club handing him a big-money five-year contract in February 2012 that reportedly made him the highest paid player in Italy.

Winning two Coppa Italia trophies, he has yet to secure a Serie A title, but finished as a runner-up five times and was named the Italian Footballer of the Year in 2009.

The midfielder also progressed through the ranks to earn his spot with the Italian senior team. A star turn for the Italian Under-21 side that won the 2004 European Championships, he also has an Olympic bronze medal to his credit, not to mention the 2006 World Cup.

Strengths: Tough tackler and his versatility means he can play in a defensive or attacking role with great consistency.

Weaknesses: Temperament is his main problem and he is a little hot-headed. He also does not contribute many goals.

Career high: Winning the World Cup with Italy in 2006 and scoring a penalty in the shoot-out.

Career low: Was sent off against USA in a World Cup 2006 group match for elbowing, virtually ending his tournament. He only played two matches.
