RAFAEL MÁRQUEZ
The defender was born in Zamora, Michoacan, in southeast Mexico. At the age of 13 he joined Atlas de Guadalajara, a club in the Mexican first division, and eventually made his debut for the first team.
After three seasons, Marquez left for Europe, signing for Monaco and joined after 1999's Copa America, even though the scout who recommended him had gone to the tournament in order to sign a different player. The move could not have worked out better, winning the league in his first season and his great performances, both at club and at international level - particularly in the 2002 World Cup - caught the eye of Barcelona, who signed him in 2003.
Adapting to a more competitive game was not easy for the "Kaiser", and he spent most of his first season on the bench. But eventually he got his chance, and became a key player, winning everything there was to win in the European game, while at international level, he helped Mexico win the 1999 Confederations Cup and 2003 Concacaf Gold Cup. After the 2010 World Cup, he chose a new challenge with the New York Red Bulls.
Strengths: A player of great technique, and physical presence. Can also play in midfield.
Weaknesses: Injury prone, lacking in pace and not always calm under pressure.
Career high: Winning the 1999 Confederations Cup at the Aztec Stadium, and winning six trophies in one season with Barcelona in 2008-09.
Career low: His sending off in the second round game against USA in the 2002 World Cup.
Style: Composed, technical, tough, a defender able to launch attacks from deep positions.
Quotes: "Rafa Marquez is the symbol of the 'Tri". Former Mexico boss Hugo Sanchez.
Trivia: His first call-up to the Mexican squad was a mistake. Coach Bora Milutinovic intended to select Cesar Marquez, but after watching Rafael train decided to let him stay.
