Spain put to the sword

Argentina handed Spain only their third defeat since 2006 after putting the reigning world and European champions to the sword early on in their friendly at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires.

Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain, two players who ply their trade in Spain, put Argentina two up inside the opening 14 minutes and Carlos Tevez made it 3-0 in the 34th minute following a costly slip by Jose Reina.

Spain, who hit the woodwork three times in the match, pulled a late goal back through Fernando Llorente but Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero made it 4-1 for the home side in injury-time.

Iran gave their preparations for January's Asian Cup a massive boost with a 1-0 friendly win over South Korea.

Osasuna star Masoud Shojaei scored after 35 minutes to inflict the first defeat for the Taeguk Warriors on home turf since January 2008. For Iran, it was their second win in four days following a 2-0 triumph over China.

Lee Chung-Yong and Park Ji-Sung went close early in the match but ten minutes before the break, their team fell behind as Shojaei gave the visitors the lead following a mistake from Lee Young-Pyo.

The full back gave the ball away in the centre circle to allow Pejman Nouri a run on goal and the Malavan midfielder squared the ball to Shojaei on the edge of the area, who clipped the ball over advancing keeper Jung Sung-Ryeong.

Catania forward Takayuki Morimoto struck twice as Japan beat Guatemala 2-1 in a friendly in Osaka.

Morimoto scored in the 12th and 20th minutes before Guatemala replied through Mario Rodriguez shortly afterwards.

Gao Lin's header secured China a 1-1 draw with Paraguay at Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre.

Lucas Barrios put the visiting side ahead just seven minutes into the game before Gao levelled in the 38th minute as the hosts held the World Cup quarter-finalists.

Holger Osieck claimed his first win as Australia coach with a 2-1 friendly victory over Poland in Chorzow.

A Brett Holman strike opened the scoring for the Socceroos after 13 minutes but Australia's joy lasted just four minutes as Robert Lewandowski steered a cross from the left past Adam Federici.

Australia re-established their lead when Richard Garcia was felled in the box after 24 minutes and Luke Wilkshire duly converted the resulting penalty.

Poland's hopes of snatching a draw were boosted by the dismissal of Brett Emerton on 70 minutes, but a combination of alert keeping from Federici and some shoddy finishing kept the home side at bay.

Bahrain claimed their first win under Austrian coach Josef Hickersberger as they thrashed Togo 3-0 at Bahrain national stadium. The Asian nation had returned consecutive draws with China and Qatar in Hickersberger's opening two games in charge.

Bahrain opened the scoring after nine minutes through their striker Jaycee Okwunwanne who followed a neat pass from Abdullah Omar with a close shot into the net. Okwunwanne scored his second goal in the last seconds of the first half when he diverted a cross from Mohamad Hubail.

Bahrain continued their dominance in the second half and they added a third goal from the penalty spot after 67 minutes. Sayed Mohamad Adnan was fouled inside the area and Ismaeil Abdullatif made no mistake.

The United Arab Emirates hammered Kuwait 3-0 in their friendly at Al Nahyan stadium in Abu Dhabi.

UAE, who are preparing for the forthcoming Gulf Cup and the 2011 AFC Asian Cup finals, opened the scoring after 24 minutes through striker Ahmad Khalil before Ismaeil Matar made it 2-0 three minutes before the break. UAE continued their pressure in the second half and they added a third goal in the first minute of stoppage-time through Saeed Salem.

Qatar striker Fabio Cesar scored a 68th-minute equaliser in their international friendly against Oman at the Al Sadd stadium. Imad Al Hosni opened the scoring for Oman after 55 minutes but the home side, who were without their Al Gharafa players due to their preparations for their forthcoming AFC Champions League match with Al Hilal, fought back.

Ukraine posted a 2-1 win over Chile in Kiev. Yaroslav Rakitskiy fired the hosts ahead after 36 minutes while Alexander Aliev increased Ukraine's advantage after 64 minutes. Mauricio Isla bagged a consolation four minutes from time for Chile.

Estonia and Uzbekistan played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in Tallinn. The hosts went ahead through Ats Purje after 25 minutes but Maksim Shatskikh's strike ensured the two sides went in level at the break.

Alexander Geynrikh fired Uzbekistan ahead 10 minutes after the restart before Estonia hit back to lead 3-2 thanks to a Konstantin Vassiljev brace. Shavkat Salomov claimed the Uzbekistan equaliser in the final moments as he deflected Shatskikh's effort into the net.
