Oriente teach Universidad a lesson

September 1, 2010

Oriente Petrolero of Bolivia have eliminated Universidad de Chile and made it into the Copa Sudamericana second stage with a 1-0 win.

Gustavo Quinteros' side took profit from the 2-2 away draw in Rancagua last week and clinched the qualification with an early goal by Danilo Peinado.

Uruguay-born Peinado connected with a Jhasmany Campos cross into the back of the net to complete the 3-2 aggregate win.

The Santa Cruz de la Sierra-based side progress to the second stage of the continental competition for the very first time, while Universidad failed to repeat their success earlier this year in reaching the Copa Libertadores semi-finals.

In Guayaquil, Uruguayan giants Penarol claimed a crucial 1-0 away win over Ecuadorian side Barcelona.

A Matias Aguirregaray shot was deflected by Barcelona defender Jose Luis Perlaza. The ball hit the crossbar and then Perlaza's body again to go into his own goal and give Manuel Keosseian's team the victory.

The closing moments of the second half saw Venezuelan referee Juan Ernesto Soto show red to Barcelona forward Luis Miguel Garces in the 82nd minute and to Penarol midfielder Fabian Estoyanoff two minutes later.

The second leg will be played on September 14 at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.

Penarol midfielder Edigio Arevalo Rios told Fox Sports that the team have what it takes to progress in the return match.

"We were really committed as Penarol have not played international championships for a long time. We won a very important game tonight and we have 90 minutes more ahead," he said.

"We are a united, solid team. We fight and help each other. We are a good team."
