Portsmouth manager Avram Grant has hit out at those in charge of the beleaguered Premier League club over the course of the season, claiming a string of promises have been broken and that he expects "there will be more surprises".

Pompey face almost certain relegation to the Championship once the Premier League ratifies their nine-point penalty for entering administration. But Grant feels he could have kept the club in the top flight had the club been run as he expected.

The former Chelsea boss thought he would be able to strengthen his squad in January, but the club was placed under a transfer embargo before the manager was told players must be sold.

And Grant also insisted he is only staying for the fans and the players and could easily have walked away in January.

Grant, fresh from leading the Fratton Park outfit into the FA Cup semi-finals, said in the Sun: "You don't need a big imagination to see we would have at least ten more points if the club had kept even 50% of its promises to me.

"When I came, I said there were two or three things we needed to do. But then other things happened and we didn't do what we'd agreed. I said we needed to sign three or four more players in January but it turned out the club wanted to sell four players.

"Maybe it was a joke I didn't understand. But I came here to be a football manager and I haven't been able to do my job. It would have been very easy for me to leave in January. I only stayed because of the fans and the players.

"Football is not just about points. It's about passion and emotions. Sometimes you take decisions from the heart. My heart told me to stay.

"I have no influence on events away from the pitch and I'm as confused as everyone else. But I am sure there will be more surprises. I am doing everything I can to save them. But it's not in my hands.
