Chelsea full-back Jose Bosingwa will miss the rest of the season and the World Cup with Portugal as he requires further surgery on a knee injury suffered against Aston Villa in October.

Bosingwa had been back in light training after knee surgery but has now been ruled out for the season because another operation is required.

That means he is unavailable for Chelsea's challenge for a treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, but it also means he will not be able to play for Portugal in the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins confirmed the news, saying: ''Bosingwa will be out for the season and have another operation, so that's him unfortunately, and he'll miss the World Cup as well,'' adding that the injury ''just needs clearing up.''

Bosingwa, who joined Chelsea from Porto for £16.3 million last season, has not played since mid-October, making only eight Premier League appearances this campaign.
